University of Ghana is the oldest and largest university in Ghana. It was founded in 1948 as University College of Gold Coast in the British colony of the Gold Coast and gained full university status in 1961.
The university has of a lot of facilities including a blend of modern and ancient buildings, a medical school, a teaching hospital and a secondary campus in the city of Accra.
The university boasts of a botanical garden which has a canopy walk way, a picnic area and different species of birds which would be of a special interest to birdwatchers.
There is also an Archaeology Museum at the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies which has a remarkable collection of ancient things such as beads and items relating to human prehistory.
In addition, the university houses the Balm Library which has a lot colonial – era books, computing resources, periodicals and other important documents to cater for the needs of both students and non – students.
