Shai Hills Resource Reserve
Found in the Osudoku District in the Greater Accra Region the Shai Resource Reserve, precisely in Doryumu township. The reserve has an area of 51 square kilometers and was established in 1962. Shai
Hills Resource Reserve is the closest wildlife sanctuary to Accra.
The area used to the home of the Shai’s but they were ejected by the British and anyone visiting the area would still see the remains of the Shai people. The Reserve covers an area of coastal savanna and a
scenic range of granite hills supporting dry evergreen forest which exhibits endemic plant species.
Do not miss a chance to visit the Shai Hills Resource Reserve and partake in activities such as birdwatching of over 173 species of birds like the black-bellied bustard, hiking, rock climbing which give
viewers the opportunity to experience the spectacular scenic views of the magnificent Accra Plains at an altitude of about 290m above sea level, game viewing of some spotted animals such as hyenas, olive baboons, antelopes, monkeys and finally exploring of caves which served as family homes for the early settlers dating to about AD1600. It is important to note that there are no accommodations facilities within the reserve but camping is permitted. You can locate accommodation facilities and food joints outside the reserve.
It is advised that you wear shoes that cover your feet (athletic shoes) and protective but not so colorful clothing when visiting this site. Speak to the onsite guard when you want to take photographs and
follow instructions while touring the site. The site can be visited throughout the year.

Getting there
Pick a trotro from Lapaz station or 37 station going to Ashaiman and pick another trotro at Ashaiman
station heading to Doryumu and alight at the entrance to the reserve. You can decide to hire a taxi from
Accra to the reserve but that can be very costly. By private car, travel along the Tema Motorway, when
you get to the Tema roundabout, take the fourth exit towards Akosombo and follow the sign post to the
reserve.
